The Back Story

“Visitors to my market stall in Port Douglas Australia will know this utensil as ‘Bev’ … a curvaceous yet stylish workhorse who is just as much at home in the most traditional of kitchens … or the most modern.

Several years ago, a friend named Bev approached me with a pretty tattered looking old wooden stirrer and asked if I could make her something similar. Turns out, she had owned it for 25 years and had brought it with her to Australia from New Zealand when she emigrated. Yes, I agreed, it was certainly time for an upgrade. Bev’s utensil was rounded like a traditional spatula, but had a horrible flat handle … I can’t imagine it would have been comfortable at all to use. I created a stirrer that showed similar fullness and roundness in the business end, but added a curvaceous comfortable handle … and named it ‘Bev’ in honour of … Bev.

I have been using this utensil in my own cooking since the very first ones I made for Bev in about 2003. It works really well for me frying or blending in round-sided pans and is a great tool for use when mixing dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. I also really like this stirrer when I have meat in the slow cooker … it’s a great length … not too long … and the short stout blade makes turning solid lumps of meat easy … and it’s also wonderful for mixing slow-cooked casserole bases” – Bob Gilmour: designer.

Description

“Bev” is a traditional spatula with ergonomically comfortable handle and functionally designed to work in all pots, pans, bowls and woks. She is available in Left or Right Handed configurations. ( See The Back Story for Bev’s story).

This is a great utensil for all stir fry and mixing or stirring tasks. It works really well for casseroles and occasionally turning contents of a slow cooker. Use it for making sauces, Bolognese, gravies, fried rice, curries … or just scrambling eggs. The Traditional Spatula is one of the heavier-bodied implements that I make, so you can apply a fair bit of force with this utensil. The length of the handle is a little shorter than some of the others so Bev feels right at home in some of the smaller pots and pans up to medium sized receptacles.

The Traditional Spatula is handmade from selected salvaged and recycled Australian hardwood timbers. The Spatula is 30 cm (11 3/4 inches) long and 6 cm (2 1/2 inches) wide with a handle thickness of about 1.8 cm (3/4 inch). The working blade is about 11 cm (4 1/2 inches) long. The utensil has a gentle curve along the blade and a slight dish in its shape and is canted to either left or right as appropriate. The working tip is very slightly dished but when the Spatula is at its working angle, the tip will present some of its width as a flat surface to the pan.

The Traditional Spatula is one of my best-selling utensils in face-to-face sales on my long-running market stall in Port Douglas, Australia. This design was first conceived in about 2003 and has been in handmade small batch production ever since.

FOR THIS SALE LISTING, ANY PURCHASED ITEM WILL BE SELECTED FROM EXISTING STOCK OR MADE-TO-ORDER.
The wood selected and colour will most likely vary from items shown in the listing images. Rest assured that purchased items shipped will be the best available from stock on the day. If a buyer has particular requirements or concerns about material used and appearance then a conversation should be initiated with the seller.

NOTE 2

THIS PRODUCT LISTING IS FOR THE PURCHASE OF ONE SINGLE UTENSIL … OR A MULTIPLE OF ONE SINGLE UTENSIL BY ADJUSTING ADD to CART QUANTITY.

CARE

Care for this utensil is very simple. Do not be scared to use it and wash it in the sink using normal practices … hot water and dishwashing detergent are fine. Preferably keep it out of the dishwasher, although experience has proven that it will not kill it if the utensil ends up in there occasionally … though the intense detergent will prematurely harm the surface and finish. Oiling is not really necessary … but you can oil it if you want.

This utensil is sanded to a very smooth finish and is fully sealed with a penetrating food-neutral resin product. You do not need to oil this item as the sealing process creates an effective moisture barrier which will greatly slow down the oxidation process during the early years of its life. The utensil will last you a very long time and will age beautifully.

Shipping Policy

Gilmour Design has been shipping work all around the world since 2001 for both face-to-face customers and online sales. Australia Post is the preferred shipping carrier and has been found to be extremely reliable and secure. Item tracking is generally available for all purchases.

Purchased items are shipped out in as timely as possible manner, though it depends on whether items are made to order or procured from stock on hand. If the latter, generally orders are posted within 3 days. For made to order items, the required time to ship is usually 5 to 7 days. Any delays in shipping will be communicated.

Purchased items are securely and strongly packed in purpose-made packaging. All items generally ship boxed … with boxes custom-made from recycled heavyweight cardboard. Products are brown paper wrapped and bubbled before boxing. Boxes are carefully made to “fit” the enclosed items so no movement of the product can occur during shipping and reinforced and padded according to the size of the item.

Refund Policy

Please refer to Cancellation/Return/Exchange Policy for general refund information.

Cancellation / Return / Exchange Policy

We all sometimes experience a bit of "buyers remorse" or receive an item which isn’t quite what we thought it was going to be. Sometimes also, mix-ups in shipping labels can occur and an item intended for someone else might turn up. Whilst inconvenient, it's usually not the end of the world and the best way to navigate such situations is to start some communication.

If you, the buyer, receive an item that you're not personally happy with on the basis of form or function or you discover that the shape doesn't really suit you, or you don't like the colour or something, please make contact with Gilmour Design immediately. The situation can generally be rectified pretty peacefully with a return / refund or a return / product exchange. In these cases, the cost of return shipping is generally the responsibility of the buyer both ways ... although because this can be a pretty grey area, there is room for negotiation. Returned items need to be in Unused and Re-sellable condition.

If you, the buyer, receive the wrong item, Gilmour Design covers all refund/shipping/exchange costs. In that event, please contact Gilmour Design straight away and, of course, the item needs to be kept in unused condition for return.

If, in the unlikely event, you receive an item that fails in the very early stages of use as a result of an obvious material defect, then please contact Gilmour Design straight away. Quality control of items created is extremely high but, particularly with wood, sometimes there might be a hairline crack or similar defect that simply isn't visible at the time of making and could open up during use. In this sort of situation, Gilmour Design will generally cover the shipping cost to send a replacement item. However, we won't be responsible for wear and tear or general damage to items sustained during on-going use by the buyer.

Refunds (if appropriate) for items made to custom order are based on several criteria. During the planning and creation stages, the buyer will receive images of the item for approval before shipping. If the item ships and the buyer is unhappy, a communication process with Gilmour Design should be initiated by email. A refund less shipping cost or partial refund less shipping and agreed-upon development fee may be made at the discretion of Gilmour Design if the item is deemed to be “re-sellable” at any selling venue. No refunds will generally be available for personalised items which have been laser engraved or otherwise bear features deemed to render them un-sellable in general. As usual, in this sort of case, please communicate with Gilmour Design.

In all cases, requests for refund / return / exchange need to be made within 14 days of receiving an item. Additionally, items to be returned need to be in Unused and Re-sellable condition. All refunds ... either full or partial ... are handled at the discretion of Gilmour Design.

Customer satisfaction is of paramount importance and every effort is made to arrive at a satisfactory outcome for the purchaser. Communication with Gilmour Design should be a top priority in any event that the buyer is dissatisfied with any aspect of the purchasing experience.
