The Merbear Adventures

Written by Verity Roennfeldt and full colour gentle pastel illustrations by Lorraine O’Brien.

15 years ago I began making ‘Merbears’ (see ‘Miss Trinkle’ as an example of a Merbear), and the Merbear Adventures are stories about these imaginary creatures.  Each Merbear I have ever made has a story about where the creature is from, and its purpose and place in the world.  The Merbear Adventure books are just some of these stories featuring six lovable characters; Mosum, Wishabae, Simooli, Yish, Old Twinkle Eyes, and of course Emily (the human who discovers Merbear Island) herself.

I have to credit my family and especially my mother in law Mary, my parents Sue and Ted, and husband Ben, in the development of these books – who laughed and talked with me on many occasions as we made up magical names and talked about the possibilities of how we share stories of environmental conservation.  The stories came together as we were raising our children, now adults with children of their own.  We wanted them to be curious, develop a love and passion for the outdoors, to treasure birds, animals and sea life – and to believe that if you can dream it, you can do it.

My friend and talented artist Lorraine OBrien, bought the Merbears to life in her gentle whimsical pastel illustrations.  We hope you enjoy them, enjoy reading them to your children and grandchildren, as much as we have enjoyed bringing the stories to life on these pages.
