Gilmour Design

Why Spend With Us?

In 2001, I got really tired of using store-bought mass-produced cooking utensils. Anything in plastic was just plain uncomfortable and wood utensils quickly went black with mold in the tropics of Far Northern Australia where I live. The solution … I started making my own.

My name is Bob Gilmour … I am the owner of Gilmour Design and make every item listed in the store. My passion is to create great design which combines beauty, function and desirability. I love minimalist forms which result in smooth organically-inspired objects made from salvaged / recycled woods and other materials.

I believe objects we use in everyday life, wear as fashion items or surround ourselves with in our homes should be beautiful in a minimal way without the need to complicate them with unnecessary adornment.

Every piece of work I create begins with careful selection of materials and is made one item at a time … there is no mass-production. During the creation process, my energy is focused on the work at hand so the best possible outcome is achieved. When products leave my studio and make the journey to their forever home, they carry the energy of love, awareness and caring that is imbued during my making process. Shipped items are prepared and packed with the same attention to detail and care that is paramount right through the creation process.

I live and create on top of a mountain range in Julatten, Far North Queensland, Australia. My environment is rainforest, native bushland with abundant wildlife, permanent creeks, swimming holes and adjacent mountains. The freedom to live within wild nature defines my creative practice and provides inspiration for the smooth flowing forms which I love … it also defines the framework by which I live my life … holistic, aware and connected. I am not bound by the routines and limitations of mainstream society so my work flows with a fluidity and ease from an inner place of knowing … without fear, anger or anxiety … Simple, Beautiful, Minimal.
